Sixth GOTiT High Level Course

The EFDA Goal Oriented Training in Theory (GOTiT) continues its series of high level courses with a 2-week course on Transport in Tokamaks at CCFE Culham Science Centre near Oxford, U.K. during May 17-28, 2010.
The lectures will be given by experts at CCFE amongst which S. Cowley, C. Roach, A. Thyagaraja, J. Connor, M. Romanelli, I. Voitsekhovich, W. Fundamenski, D. McDonald, R. Akers, K. McClements, F. Militello, and Luca Garzotti, and by invited lecturers from outside CCFE.
The hands-on sessions will consist in running one or more transport codes and will be held under the guidance of an experienced lecturer.
The course will cover a variety of topics focusing on particle, energy, and momentum transport in tokamak geometry. Topics which will be discussed include the following:

  • Introduction to transport in a generic medium
  • Introduction to transport in tokamaks (theory): core and edge
  • Classical and neoclassical transport
  • Introduction to transport in tokamaks (experiment): core and edge
  • Confinement modes and scalings
  • Transport barriers
  • Instabilities affecting transport (ELMs, Sawtooth, NTM)
  • Basic notions on turbulence and resulting transport (fluid and plasma)
  • Heat, particle, momentum, and current transport in turbulent tokamak plasmas
  • Overview of recent kinetic approaches to turbulent transport
  • Core transport of impurity ions and fast particles
  • Transport equations in the plasma edge, scrape-off layer, and divertor
  • Phenomenological transport models
  • Core transport codes: ETS, ASTRA
  • Edge transport codes: EDGE2D
  • First principle transport codes: CENTORI, TRINITY, GENE

The course will consist of lectures and practical exercises.
The practical parts of the course will be carried out on the EFDA ITM Gateway cluster in Portici, Italy which is generously provided by ENEA and the EFDA ITM. Special thanks go to Francesco Iannone for providing temporary accounts on the ITM Gateway.
The material of the course will be made available upon request.
